Committed to Reducing Emissions Faster

WE’RE INVESTING AND INNOVATING FOR A BETTER FUTURE

The chemicals sector, including Chemours, plays a central and complex role in the transition to a low-carbon economy due to the current and future demand for chemicals that enable low-carbon and energy-saving technologies. As the sector grows to meet this need, it must do so while reducing its emissions.

Our 2022 Climate Highlights

  • Reduced total Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% from our 2018 baseline, hitting the halfway point to our goal of an absolute reduction of 60%
  • Identified and implemented 12 energy reduction initiatives at our Dordrecht site in the Netherlands, reducing energy intensity by almost 3% in one year
  • Created an independent goal to improve energy intensity by 20% by 2030, against a 2018 baseline, within our Titanium Technologies segment—our most energy-intensive business
  • Completed HFC-23 emissions reduction project at Louisville, Kentucky, site, which is designed to reduce 99% of HFC-23 process emissions, which, in turn represent approximately 25% of total baseline GHG emissions
  • Partnered with TC Energy to run hydrogen blend trials in boiler systems at Belle and Washington Works sites, both in West Virginia, successfully validating integration of clean hydrogen into our emissions reduction strategy
  • Won three awards for GHG emission reduction efforts; including two US Department of Energy (DOE) Better Plants Program awards and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Award

Continuing our Journey to Net Zero

Production decreased slightly and total emissions decreased by approximately 1 million tons CO₂e from 2021 to 2022. Reduction in emissions from our 2018 baseline as well as year over year is primarily due to emissions abatement projects, energy efficiency and renewable power. Our progress was primarily due to targeted emissions reduction initiatives completed in late 2022  and improved operational efficiencies at several of our Thermal & Specialized Solutions (TSS) and Advanced Performance Materials (APM) manufacturing sites.

We continue to work on capital programs and to secure renewable power for our sites. In 2022, we secured renewable power as a portion of the purchased electricity for our Starke, Florida; New Johnsonville, Tennessee; and Belle, West Virginia sites. The first full year of emissions reductions benefits will occur starting 2022 through 2023 after the projects go live. Overall, by year-end 2022, we committed to procure approximately 100,000 MWh per year of renewable power.
